The Federal Ministry of Education has dismissed reports alleging that the Nigeria Education Management Information System (NEMIS) suffered a cyberattack, insisting that the platform remains secure and fully operational.
In a statement issued by the Ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, the government described the reports as inaccurate and misleading, stressing that there was no security breach, hacking incident, or compromise of education data.
According to the ministry, the warning message encountered by some users was caused by a technical issue involving the platform’s SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate configuration and not by any cyberattack.
The ministry explained that while the issue temporarily affected secure access certification, it did not result in unauthorized access, data loss, alteration of records, or exposure of sensitive information.
Officials said the technical team, working alongside the hosting service provider, promptly resolved the issue and restored normal service operations.
The ministry further noted that browser security alerts related to SSL certificates should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of a cyberattack, adding that such warnings can arise from routine technical or configuration issues.
Reaffirming its commitment to data security, the Ministry stated that NEMIS remains a critical platform for education data management nationwide and is protected through continuous system monitoring, infrastructure safeguards, regular security assessments, and other cybersecurity measures.
