The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Edo State Government to harness the state’s rich tourism potential as part of broader efforts to stimulate economic growth and improve Nigeria’s global image.
The Director-General of the Nigeria Tourism Development Authority (NTDA), Ola Awakan, gave the assurance on Monday in Benin City during the opening of a two-day Tourism Summit, Exhibition and Fashion Show organised by the Edo State Tourism Agency.
Awakan noted that Edo State’s vast cultural and historical assets can only be fully developed through strong collaboration between government institutions, the private sector, and other stakeholders.
He stressed that synergy was essential to unlocking opportunities within the tourism industry, describing the sector as a major driver of employment, foreign exchange earnings, infrastructure development, and cultural preservation.
According to him, Nigeria’s cultural heritage presents a powerful opportunity to reshape global perceptions of the country.
He said: “Nigeria is not a country defined by violence or insecurity. We are a people blessed with rich culture, enduring traditions, and remarkable artistic heritage. We must work together to tell our stories through arts and culture and change the negative narrative about our country.”
Awakan expressed optimism that the summit would produce a practical roadmap for sustainable tourism development in Edo State and beyond.
In her remarks, the Director-General of the Edo State Tourism Agency, Vivian Elabor, said the summit brought together investors, cultural ambassadors, tourists, and other stakeholders to explore ways of unlocking the state’s tourism potential.
She highlighted Edo’s rich cultural history, festivals, arts, crafts, and ecological attractions as key assets capable of driving a vibrant tourism economy.
Elabor added that the summit focused on digital transformation, investment opportunities, community engagement, sustainability, and innovation in tourism development.
She also commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for his support for the sector, noting that tourism plays a key role in the state’s economic diversification agenda.
The Secretary to the Edo State Government, Musa Ikhilor, also urged residents to promote the state’s cultural heritage and tourism sites to boost visibility and attract more visitors.
