The Federal Government has handed over 20 resettlement housing units to families displaced by recurrent flooding in Benue State as part of efforts to improve the welfare of affected communities.
The houses were delivered by the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) during a ceremony in Mbagen, Buruku Local Government Area.
Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of N-HYPPADEC, Sadiq Yelwa, said the project is aimed at restoring hope and dignity to internally displaced persons while reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting communities impacted by hydroelectric power generation.
Represented by the Commission’s Director of Finance and Administration, Jimoh Gabi, Yelwa explained that N-HYPPADEC was established to address the developmental, environmental and socio-economic challenges facing hydropower-producing communities.
He noted that the Commission’s interventions span housing, healthcare, education, agriculture, water supply, environmental protection, renewable energy and empowerment programmes.
According to him, 63 housing units were approved for beneficiary local government areas in Benue State, with the first 20 units now completed and ready for occupation.
The completed houses include 10 units in Buruku and 10 units in Guma Local Government Area, both designated for families displaced by flooding.
