The Federal Government has begun discussions with electricity distribution companies on plans to establish special Energy Zones aimed at providing more reliable, round-the-clock electricity to homes, businesses and industries in major demand centres.
The proposed zones will cover the Lagos axis, Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, Enugu and Port Harcourt corridors.
Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the initiative would address distribution challenges and ensure more of the electricity generated and transmitted to the national grid reaches consumers.
He added that the zones are expected to support commercial and industrial activity while improving the revenue and collection performance of electricity distribution companies.
The government, however, has not announced when the Energy Zones will become operational or disclosed the specific infrastructure investments required to achieve 24-hour supply.
