The Federal Government is reviewing its foreign scholarship and bilateral education agreements to cut unnecessary spending and redirect resources towards strengthening Nigerian tertiary institutions.
Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, said the government could no longer justify funding overseas studies for programmes already offered by Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
He said existing scholarship beneficiaries would continue receiving support until they complete their studies, while new government-funded awards under the reviewed arrangements have been discontinued.
Alausa stressed that the policy is not a ban on foreign scholarships, noting that other countries willing to sponsor Nigerian students can continue to do so.
