The Federal Government has ordered an investigation into up to 100 megawatts (MW) of electricity reportedly unaccounted for along the 132kV Ikorodu-Sagamu transmission corridor in Lagos and Ogun states. The probe is aimed at determining the circumstances surrounding the missing power and identifying possible gaps within the electricity supply and distribution chain.
The development comes against the backdrop of significant financial losses in Nigeria’s electricity market, estimated at about ₦120 billion annually. Authorities are expected to examine the flow of electricity along the corridor, including transmission, distribution and metering processes, to establish where the discrepancies occur and the factors responsible for the unaccounted energy.
The investigation is also expected to provide clarity on whether the losses are linked to technical challenges, inadequate metering, operational inefficiencies or other irregularities within the power network. Findings from the exercise could help relevant agencies determine the appropriate measures to address the identified gaps and reduce avoidable losses in the sector.
The Federal Government’s move underscores its efforts to improve accountability and efficiency in the electricity market while ensuring that available power is properly accounted for and delivered to consumers. A successful investigation could also strengthen monitoring mechanisms along critical transmission corridors and support broader reforms aimed at reducing losses and improving reliability across Nigeria’s power sector.
