The Federal Government has filed a 13-count charge before the Federal High Court in Abuja against six individuals, including two retired senior military officers and a serving police inspector, over an alleged plot to overthrow the government and commit acts of terrorism.
Among those charged are retired Major General Mohammed Gana, retired Naval Captain Erasmus Victor, Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Goni, and Abdulkadir Sani. They are scheduled to be arraigned on April 22 before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik.
Also named in the charge but currently at large is former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva.
According to the charge filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and signed by Director of Public Prosecutions, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), the defendants face allegations including treason, terrorism, failure to disclose intelligence, and money laundering linked to terrorism financing.
Prosecutors allege that the defendants conspired in 2025 to “levy war against the state” and had prior knowledge of a planned coup but failed to inform authorities or take preventive action.
The charges further claim that some of the accused attended meetings to advance a political agenda capable of destabilising Nigeria’s constitutional structure, while others allegedly provided financial and logistical support for terrorist activities.
Several defendants are also accused of handling large sums of money suspected to be proceeds of terrorism financing, in violation of relevant financial and anti-terrorism laws.
The case is expected to test the government’s resolve in tackling threats to national security as proceedings begin in Abuja.
