The Federal Government has announced plans to expand its National Grassroots LPG Penetration Programme to more than 10 million Nigerian homes by 2060 as part of efforts to promote clean cooking nationwide.
The programme, implemented by the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources (Gas) in collaboration with the Decade of Gas Initiative, was launched in Akwa Ibom State as the second phase of its nationwide state-by-state rollout.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, said the initiative targets one million households annually, with five million homes expected to benefit by 2030 and more than 10 million by 2060.
As part of the Akwa Ibom rollout, 27,000 filled LPG cylinders are expected to be distributed to women, with beneficiaries also receiving up to six free refills. The programme will eventually cover all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The initiative is designed to improve access to cleaner cooking, reduce reliance on traditional cooking fuels, create jobs and support household incomes, particularly in rural communities.
The Federal Government also launched a Rural Women Empowerment Initiative, through which 3,000 women will receive ₦100,000 each to support businesses, agriculture and household economic activities.
