The Federal Government has announced plans to roll out 10,000 electric tricycles into the Nigerian market from August 2026 as part of ongoing efforts to modernise public transportation, enhance logistics efficiency, and promote cleaner energy solutions.
Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed this during a courtesy visit by members of the Transporters for Tinubu/Shettima 2027 group, stating that the initiative will initially be implemented through the North East Development Commission (NEDC) before being expanded to other regions of the country.
According to the Vice President, President Bola Tinubu has approved the extension of the programme through the various regional development commissions, underscoring the administration’s commitment to sustainable transportation and economic development.
Shettima explained that the government’s transport reform agenda seeks to create an integrated logistics network connecting seaports, rail systems, inland waterways, airports, and road infrastructure to facilitate the seamless movement of goods and services across the country.
“Our vision is an unbroken logistics chain, where a container moves from a deep-sea port to a rail wagon, then to a CNG-powered truck, and finally to traders and consumers without delay or policy bottlenecks,” he said.
The Vice President also highlighted the achievements of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Initiative, noting that the programme has significantly reduced transportation costs by enabling heavy-duty vehicles to operate on locally sourced natural gas.
He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of transport workers through affordable fuel alternatives, improved infrastructure, insurable fleets, and sustainable business opportunities across the transportation sector.
Meanwhile, transport unions representing the road, rail, maritime, and aviation sectors reiterated their support for the Tinubu administration, expressing confidence that ongoing reforms will strengthen Nigeria’s transportation ecosystem and drive economic growth.
The planned deployment of electric tricycles is expected to boost green mobility, create employment opportunities, lower transportation costs, and contribute to the country’s transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.
