The Community Category of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Green Nigeria Challenge has closed without receiving any significant entries, despite offering a ₦50 million prize for environmental transformation projects.
Announcing the outcome, the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, said the category, which closed on July 15, 2026, was created to encourage communities to transform degraded spaces such as dumpsites, abandoned lands, and landfills into parks, gardens, and other environmentally sustainable spaces.
While expressing disappointment over the lack of participation, the First Lady commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for the remodelling of the Abuja City Gate, describing it as a fitting example of the type of environmental renewal the initiative seeks to promote.
She urged state governments to replicate similar projects by investing in cleaner and greener communities, improving waste management, and ensuring drainage channels remain free of plastic waste and other obstructions to reduce the risk of flooding.
Mrs. Tinubu also announced that the Household and State categories of the Green Nigeria Challenge remain open until December 20, 2026, encouraging eligible households and state governments to submit their entries through the Offices of the First Ladies in their respective states.
The Renewed Hope Initiative Green Nigeria Challenge is a nationwide environmental campaign aimed at promoting tree planting, restoring degraded ecosystems, and encouraging sustainable environmental practices across Nigeria.
