FRSC urges drivers to avoid Kara Bridge

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Sector Command, has advised motorists to use alternative routes as rescue and recovery operations continue following multiple road traffic crashes on Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the early hours of Friday, July 24, 2026.

According to the Command, the first crash occurred at approximately 12:05 a.m. on the outbound carriageway towards Ibadan and involved five articulated trucks and a Toyota Sienna.

Preliminary investigations attributed the crash to excessive speed and loss of vehicle control.

Seven adult males were involved in the incident. One person was confirmed dead, another sustained injuries, while five others escaped unharmed.

The Command disclosed that the deceased remains trapped beneath one of the heavily loaded trucks due to its position, requiring the deployment of heavy-duty recovery equipment before evacuation can be completed.

While rescue and recovery efforts were still underway, a second crash occurred at about 3:15 a.m. on the inbound carriageway towards Lagos involving a Mazda commercial bus.

The lone crash was caused by brake failure, leaving the driver with serious injuries. FRSC emergency responders rescued the victim and transported him to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre for medical treatment.

The FRSC, in collaboration with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and other emergency responders, is currently working to evacuate the crashed vehicles, recover the trapped victim, clear the affected section of the road, and restore the free flow of traffic.

The Lagos Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde Ganiyu Hamzat, expressed sympathy to the families of the victims and appealed to motorists using the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to remain patient, exercise caution, and cooperate with traffic management officials at the scene.

Motorists have been strongly advised to avoid the Kara–Ojodu Berger corridor where possible until recovery operations are completed.

Recommended alternative routes include:

  • Motorists travelling from Lagos towards Ibadan should divert through the Ikorodu–Sagamu route.
  • Those heading into Lagos are advised to consider the Lekki–Epe Expressway or the Ikorodu–Sagamu Expressway as alternative entry routes.

The Command further reminded motorists, particularly operators of articulated vehicles and commercial buses, to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any journey, with special attention given to the braking system.

Drivers are also advised to avoid unnecessary night travel, especially during periods of poor visibility caused by darkness, rainfall, or fog. Where night travel is unavoidable, motorists should reduce speed, maintain safe following distances, avoid dangerous overtaking, and take adequate rest whenever they feel fatigued.

The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of all road users and stated that it will continue working with relevant emergency and traffic management agencies to restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible.
