Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has praised the Nigerian Army for its sustained efforts in combating crime, crude oil theft, and illegal bunkering, saying the military’s operations have contributed to increased crude oil production and improved national revenue.
Governor Fubara made the remarks on Friday while receiving the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, during a courtesy visit ahead of the 163rd Nigerian Army Anniversary Celebration, which will be hosted in Rivers State.
The governor said the Nigerian Army has continued to play a vital role in protecting the country’s strategic oil and gas infrastructure by tackling criminal networks involved in crude oil theft and other security threats.
According to him, the improved security around critical national assets has enhanced crude oil production, leading to higher revenue for the Federal Government.
Fubara also commended the Army Chief for his leadership in strengthening national security and improving the welfare of officers and soldiers across the country.
He expressed confidence that the Nigerian Army would continue to fulfil its constitutional mandate of defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and maintaining internal security.
The governor noted that the decision to host the Army’s 163rd Anniversary Celebration in Rivers State, despite recent security concerns, reflects growing confidence in the state’s peace and stability.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian Army and other security agencies, stressing that maintaining peace and security remains a collective responsibility.
Fubara pledged to sustain collaboration with the military to promote security, economic growth, and development in Rivers State and across the country.
Speaking during the visit, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu said his trip formed part of activities marking the Nigerian Army’s 163rd Anniversary Celebration.
He disclosed that the event will attract Chiefs of Army Staff from 21 African countries, Vice President Kashim Shettima, two former Nigerian presidents, and other distinguished guests.
The Army Chief described Rivers State as a strategic partner of the Nigerian Army and commended the state government for its continued support to the 6 Division Nigerian Army, particularly in upgrading infrastructure and providing facilities for the anniversary celebration.
He also expressed appreciation to Governor Fubara for his administration’s commitment to strengthening the operational capacity of the Nigerian Army in Rivers State.
