The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially confirmed politician and public policy advocate, Funso Doherty, as its governorship candidate for Lagos State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Announcing his acceptance of the nomination on Friday via his X (formerly Twitter) account, Doherty expressed gratitude to the party leadership and members for the confidence reposed in him, describing the nomination as a call to service driven by purpose and commitment.
“With profound humility, gratitude, and a clear sense of purpose, I accept our party’s nomination to serve as its candidate for Governor of Lagos State in 2027,” Doherty stated.
He emphasized the need for inclusive, people-centered governance in Lagos, noting that the state deserves leadership that works for every resident, regardless of background or status. He also assured supporters that the journey toward building a more prosperous and equitable Lagos had already begun.
Doherty concluded his message with a rallying call to Lagosians, declaring: “My friends, it’s time – O TI Ya!”
Reacting to the announcement, the NDC’s Director of New Media and Strategic Communications, Theo Abu Agada, described Doherty’s emergence as a major political development capable of reshaping the state’s political landscape.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, @funsodoherty is the candidate of our great party, the NDC, in Lagos State. It is over for the APC in Lagos,” Agada wrote on X.
Doherty’s nomination sets the stage for what is expected to be a closely watched contest in Nigeria’s commercial capital as political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.
