Gunmen reportedly attacked the convoy of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, in Osogbo on Wednesday, shortly after his visit to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji.
The incident reportedly triggered an exchange of gunfire between the suspected attackers and security personnel attached to the governor’s convoy.
The shooting lasted for about 12 to 15 minutes, according to an eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Adeleke had arrived at the Ataoja’s palace at about 3:15 p.m. in a convoy of about 20 vehicles after receiving his Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission in Osogbo following his re-election.
The governor and his entourage were reportedly received by the monarch, to whom Adeleke presented his Certificate of Return during the visit.
According to the eyewitness, trouble began as the meeting was coming to an end after the monarch offered prayers.
The source said Adeleke had already left the palace hall through an exit reserved for the monarch and his wives and was inside his vehicle when heavy gunshots were heard.
The attackers were reportedly travelling in an unregistered Sienna vehicle that approached the area through Ita Olokan in Osogbo.
The eyewitness said the governor’s security personnel engaged the suspected hoodlums in a gun battle before the attackers eventually fled the scene.
The incident occurred amid heightened political activities in the state following Adeleke’s victory in the August 15 governorship election.
Details on the identities of the attackers, their motive and whether anyone was injured in the incident were not immediately available.
