Erling Haaland struck a late winner as Norway defeated Côte d’Ivoire 2–1 in Texas on Tuesday to secure a place in the World Cup last 16, where they will face Brazil.
The Manchester City forward bundled home the decisive goal in the 86th minute—his fifth of the tournament—after Patrick Berg delivered a crucial cross to seal a historic knockout victory for Norway.
It was Norway’s first-ever win in a World Cup knockout match, marking a significant milestone for the Scandinavian side.
The game began cautiously before Antonio Nusa broke the deadlock six minutes before half-time with a superb strike to give Norway the lead.
Côte d’Ivoire responded strongly in the second half, with Manchester United winger Amad Diallo making an immediate impact after coming on. He helped deny Norway a second goal before scoring a brilliant equaliser in the 74th minute to revive the African side’s hopes.
However, just as extra time loomed, Haaland delivered the decisive blow to end Côte d’Ivoire’s campaign and send Norway through.
The Ivorians, who were appearing in the knockout stage for the first time, had moments of dominance but were ultimately undone by Norway’s late surge.
Norway will now meet five-time champions Brazil in a highly anticipated last-16 clash on Sunday in New Jersey.
