Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has assured traders and stakeholders at Alaba International Market, Ojo, of the state government’s continued investment in critical infrastructure to promote commerce, enhance mobility and improve residents’ quality of life.
Hamzat gave the assurance on Friday at the unveiling of the New Face of International Market Electronics Association, held at the Colonnade Hotel, Ikoyi, where he reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to reconstructing roads and improving drainage infrastructure in Alaba International Market.
The Deputy Governor explained that the reconstruction of roads within the market would commence after the completion of ongoing drainage works designed to tackle flooding and improve water flow.
According to him, completing the drainage infrastructure is essential to ensuring the durability of the proposed road network, particularly given the market’s susceptibility to flooding.
“We’ve done all the drainage behind the market, and now it is almost 70 per cent done. So, we must complete the drainage, and the moment we finish it, then the road is coming. We must also expand the road because of the increasing population,” Hamzat said.
He assured market leaders that the state government would continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to transform Alaba International Market into a more efficient and sustainable commercial hub.
Hamzat also reiterated the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of traders and creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive across the state.
In his goodwill message, Senator Uzor Orji Kalu commended the Lagos State Government for its commitment to rehabilitating critical road infrastructure in Alaba International Market.
Kalu said effective governance must be anchored on truth, transparency and the delivery of projects that have a direct impact on the lives and businesses of citizens.
He also described Hamzat, the APC governorship candidate for the 2027 election, as a leader with a proven track record in infrastructure development and a strong understanding of Lagos State’s needs.
Kalu expressed confidence that Hamzat would sustain engagement with communities across the state, including Alaba, to identify priority projects and accelerate socio-economic development.
Earlier in his welcome address, the President-General of Alaba International Market Electronics, Chief Camillus Amajuoyi, described the New Face of Alaba initiative as a bold transformation agenda aimed at repositioning the market as a cleaner, safer, digitally driven and globally competitive commercial centre.
Amajuoyi said the initiative represents a renewed vision for one of Africa’s largest electronics markets, adding that it reflects the traders’ commitment to integrity, discipline, innovation and global best practices while preserving Alaba’s longstanding reputation as a centre of entrepreneurship and economic opportunity.
He commended the Lagos State Government for its continued investments in infrastructure and urban renewal, as well as policies that have created a more conducive environment for businesses to operate.
Amajuoyi, however, appealed to the government to urgently rehabilitate roads within the market to improve accessibility, movement of goods and overall business activities.
