The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has cautioned officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Borno State against engaging in result manipulation and other forms of electoral malpractice ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner overseeing Borno and Yobe states, Linus Gubbi, issued the warning on Wednesday in Maiduguri during a sensitisation workshop organised to promote integrity, accountability and transparency among electoral officials.
Speaking at the event, Gubbi said the credibility of any election depends on the integrity and compliance of those responsible for conducting it, stressing that democracy can only thrive through free, fair and credible elections.
He urged INEC officials to avoid corrupt practices such as result manipulation, abuse of office, inducement and compromise of electoral procedures, warning that such actions undermine public confidence, threaten peace and development, and attract sanctions.
According to him, the workshop forms part of the ICPC’s preventive mandate to educate public officials on the importance of upholding ethical standards and ensuring transparency throughout the electoral process.
Gubbi also commended the Borno State office of INEC for its cooperation and prompt mobilisation of staff for the training, while encouraging continued collaboration to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system.
In his remarks, the Head of Department, General Administration at INEC, Borno State, Sadiq Grema, described the training as enlightening, saying it exposed participants to important aspects of anti-corruption measures and electoral integrity.
Grema also praised the ICPC for its support, describing the commission as one of the most impactful government agencies the electoral body has worked with.
