Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has pledged to wear the traditional Akwete buba and wrapper if President Bola Tinubu is re-elected in the 2027 general elections.
She made the remark during her first visit to the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Village in Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State, where she also unveiled a ₦2 billion intervention fund aimed at revitalizing and promoting the famous indigenous textile industry.
Speaking during the visit, Senator Tinubu praised the quality of Akwete fabric, describing it as soft, breathable, and deserving of greater national and international recognition. She said she hopes to showcase the fabric at one of Nigeria’s major ceremonial events.
The First Lady also commended the women behind the centuries-old weaving tradition for preserving the craft and passing it down through generations. She urged Nigerians to support locally made textiles to strengthen indigenous industries, preserve cultural heritage, and create sustainable economic opportunities for local artisans.
Governor Alex Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to developing the Akwete textile industry through technology and innovation, while expressing confidence in its economic potential. He also praised President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of the foreign exchange market.
Governor Otti’s wife, Priscilla Otti, described the visit as historic and applauded Senator Tinubu’s commitment to empowering women and preserving the Akwete weaving heritage through the Renewed Hope Initiative.
