The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) have agreed to strengthen their partnership to enhance migration reporting in Nigeria through specialised training, research and knowledge sharing.
The collaboration is designed to equip journalists with a deeper understanding of migration issues, particularly the distinction between regular and irregular migration, while promoting accurate, balanced and ethical reporting on a topic that continues to affect thousands of Nigerians.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the NUJ National Secretariat in Lagos, IOM Chief of Media and Communications, Rajat Madhok, said the organisation is committed to expanding its engagement with Nigerian journalists.
According to him, the partnership will enable journalists to tell compelling stories of successful migration while also raising awareness about the risks associated with irregular migration.
“We are looking at opportunities beyond what we have done in the past because we are interested in telling the world positive stories of successful migration while also addressing the challenges associated with both regular and irregular migration,” Madhok said.
He added that the initiative would equip journalists with the knowledge required to help the public make informed decisions on migration-related issues.
Responding on behalf of the NUJ, Deputy President Dr. (Mrs.) Abimbola Oyetunde described the partnership as timely, noting that many journalists require a better understanding of migration concepts to report accurately and responsibly.
She stressed the need for sustained capacity building, adding that irregular migration has continued to claim lives as many Nigerians undertake dangerous journeys through illegal routes in search of better opportunities.
The partnership is expected to improve public awareness by encouraging evidence-based reporting, countering misinformation, exposing the dangers of human trafficking, and highlighting safe and legal migration pathways.
