The Kano State Government has commenced the distribution of 90,000 bags of subsidised fertiliser to farmers across the state’s 44 local government areas and 848 political wards ahead of the 2026 wet farming season.
Flagging off the exercise on Thursday, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and is aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and enhancing food security.
According to the governor, each of the 44 local government areas will receive three truckloads of fertiliser, while 70 beneficiaries have been selected from each political ward.
Governor Yusuf explained that although a bag of fertiliser currently sells for about ₦50,000 in the open market, the state government, in collaboration with local government councils, has subsidised the cost by 50 per cent, enabling farmers to purchase each bag for ₦25,000.
“Agriculture remains one of the cornerstones of our development agenda,” the governor said.
He noted that over the past three years, his administration has implemented several agricultural support programmes, including the provision of quality farm inputs, improved farming techniques, pest control measures, and other interventions designed to increase crop yields.
According to him, the sustained supply of subsidised agricultural inputs has contributed to improved harvests, lower food prices, increased rural employment, and strengthened food security across the state.
Governor Yusuf also announced the inauguration of a committee to oversee the transparent distribution of the fertiliser and commended security agencies for maintaining peace and supporting the successful implementation of government programmes.
