The Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking has commenced a coordinated campaign to tackle drug abuse, illicit trafficking, thuggery and other related crimes across the state.
The Secretary of the task force, Dr. Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, disclosed this following the committee’s maiden meeting in Kano, describing it as a major step toward strengthening collaboration among government institutions, security agencies and other stakeholders.
The meeting, chaired by the Chairman of the task force, Barr. Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado, was attended by key officials, including the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Tajo Usman, and the Kano State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Dr. Mustapha.
Rimingado described the task force as a strategic platform established to provide a unified response to drug abuse and illicit trafficking, stressing that its success would depend on effective collaboration, intelligence sharing and sustained commitment from all participating agencies.
According to him, the committee will focus on strengthening law enforcement, intelligence gathering, public awareness campaigns, rehabilitation programmes and community engagement to curb drug-related crimes and protect vulnerable groups, particularly young people.
The task force also pledged to work closely with security agencies, traditional and religious institutions, civil society organisations, educational institutions, youth groups and community leaders to develop practical and lasting solutions to the menace.
Members unanimously resolved to strengthen institutional cooperation, establish an operational framework for the task force and immediately begin coordinated activities in line with the directives of the Kano State Government.
The committee further appealed to residents to support the initiative by providing credible information and cooperating with relevant authorities in the collective effort to eliminate drug abuse, illicit trafficking and related criminal activities across Kano State.
