The Kebbi State Government has announced February 11 to 14, 2026, as the dates for the Argungu International Fishing Festival.
The Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Samaila Mera, disclosed to journalists on Friday after an expanded meeting involving the State Festival Main Committee and the Emirate Local Organising Committee, held at the Deputy Governor’s Office.
According to the emir, the Argungu Fishing Festival originated as a peace initiative between the Sokoto Caliphate jihadists and the Kanta Kingdom. He noted that due to its historical importance, the festival was later recognised by UNESCO as an international cultural event.
He also explained that following the Nigerian Civil War, the festival was used as a platform to promote national unity by bringing together fishermen from across the country during the administration of General Yakubu Gowon.
The emir added that this year’s edition is expected to attract dignitaries from different parts of the world and will serve as an opportunity to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Argungu Kingdom on a global stage.
Also speaking at the meeting, the Chairman of the State Main Committee and Deputy Governor of Kebbi State, Senator Umar Tafida, said preparations for the festival were already underway.
He disclosed that several subcommittees had been constituted to ensure the smooth organisation and success of the event, adding that the state government had made adequate arrangements covering venue preparation, hospitality, awards for winners, and other logistics.
Senator Tafida urged members of the committees to remain committed to their responsibilities and work diligently towards delivering a successful festival.
