The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing persistent electricity supply challenges in Ibeju-Lekki through power-sector reforms and strategic infrastructure investments. The initiative is aimed at supporting the rapid residential, commercial and industrial development taking place across the corridor.
The assurance was given at an Electricity Stakeholders’ Dialogue on Addressing Longstanding Power Supply Challenges, hosted by the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government and Chairman, Conference 57 Lagos, Hon. (Engr.) Abdullahi Sesan Olowa. Speaking at the engagement, the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Biodun Ogunleye, said the State was taking a comprehensive approach to developing the Ibeju-Lekki axis, with electricity forming part of a wider infrastructure programme.
Ogunleye listed several ongoing and planned projects, including the Purple Line rail extension, service lanes, telecommunications infrastructure, gas pipelines and major electricity transmission facilities. He identified the 132kV transmission line from the Ajah Power Substation to Eleko Junction as a key intervention, disclosing that the contractor had been mobilised through collaboration between the Lagos and Federal Governments and that work was already at an advanced stage.
According to the Commissioner, the transmission project is expected to increase the capacity to evacuate and distribute electricity to Ibeju-Lekki, Akodo, Eleko and neighbouring communities. He explained that the project would complement existing and proposed generation and gas infrastructure, while the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC) and Lagos State Independent System Operator (LAISO) would provide the regulatory and operational framework for the evolving electricity market.
During the dialogue, Surveyor Adeola Amokaye presented the proposed Right-of-Way alignment from Ajah to Eleko Junction, highlighting its interaction with existing roads, drainage systems, gas pipelines, telecommunications facilities and developed areas. Stakeholders raised concerns about potentially affected properties and called for sustained engagement with residents and property owners, while the Commissioner assured them that the State would seek solutions that minimise disruption and balance infrastructure needs with legitimate community interests.
The Member of the House of Representatives representing Ibeju-Lekki Constituency, Hon. Bayo Balogun, commended the initiative and called for stronger cooperation among the Federal Government, Lagos State Government, Local Government, electricity-sector institutions and host communities. Olowa also reaffirmed the Local Government’s commitment to supporting the interventions, while the interactive session provided residents and stakeholders with an opportunity to seek clarification on electricity supply, the transmission project, Right-of-Way requirements and other infrastructure developments across the corridor.
