The Lagos State Government has called for stronger collaboration among scientists, researchers, policymakers and development partners to advance science-based solutions for tackling climate change, coastal resilience, flooding, public health challenges and social inequality.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, made the call while declaring open the 58th Annual Conference of the Science Association of Nigeria (SAN) – Eko 2026, held at the Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja. The conference is themed “Science, Coastal Cities, Public Health and Social Equality in the Blue Economy.”
Addressing participants, Wahab said the world is facing unprecedented environmental challenges, citing record-breaking heatwaves across Europe and increased rainfall across parts of Africa, particularly Lagos, where heavy precipitation has contributed to more frequent flooding.
“Climate change is real, and we must all be prepared to play our part in creating a sustainable and resilient environment,” he said.
The Commissioner recalled that during the recent World Environment Day celebration, the state reaffirmed its commitment to nature-based solutions, stressing that forests, wetlands and urban green spaces remain critical tools for climate adaptation and environmental resilience.
He described the conference theme as both timely and relevant, noting that the blue economy extends beyond oceans, ports and fisheries to encompass sustainable economic growth driven by healthy aquatic ecosystems while promoting environmental sustainability and social inclusion.
According to Wahab, scientific research remains indispensable for understanding the impacts of sea-level rise, coastal erosion, ocean temperatures and changing marine ecosystems, adding that evidence-based research is vital for informed policymaking and long-term environmental planning.
He urged stakeholders to prioritise sustainable urban planning, strategic infrastructure development and ecosystem protection, stressing that decisions taken today would determine the resilience and wellbeing of future generations.
Wahab also called for stronger partnerships across governments, academia, industry and international organisations to advance sustainable development and safeguard the environment.
In his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Office of Environment Services, Mr. Omobolaji Tajudeen Gaji, described Lagos’ hosting of the conference as a reflection of the state’s commitment to science, innovation and environmental sustainability.
He commended the contributions of more than 2,000 Scientific Officers and Science Technologists serving across Ministries, Departments and Agencies, noting that their expertise continues to support environmental management, public health, water resources, agriculture and urban development across the state.
Gaji observed that while Lagos faces increasing challenges arising from rapid urbanisation, climate change, pollution and public health concerns, its coastal location also presents significant opportunities within the blue economy that can only be fully realised through scientific research, technological innovation, sound public policy and strategic collaboration.
Also speaking, President of the Science Association of Nigeria (SAN), Prof. Adeniyi Ogunjobi, called on the Federal, State and Local Governments to significantly increase investment in science education, research and innovation as critical drivers of national development.
He urged governments to boost budgetary allocations for scientific research, education and infrastructure, while ensuring the timely release of research grants to scientists and scientific organisations.
According to Ogunjobi, sustained investment in science is essential to addressing Nigeria’s development challenges and positioning the country for sustainable economic growth through innovation and evidence-based policymaking.
