The Lagos State House of Assembly has begun moves to increase the retirement age for magistrates in the state from 60 to 65 years.
The lawmakers made the move during plenary on Monday while considering the Magistrate Courts Amendment Bill 2026, which seeks to strengthen the magistracy, retain experienced judicial officers and improve the administration of justice in Lagos.
Leading the debate, the Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, Public Petitions and LASIEC, Oladipo Ajomale, said the proposed amendment would improve the welfare and conditions of service of magistrates.
The proposed increase is also expected to help the judiciary retain experienced magistrates and strengthen the effective delivery of justice across the state.
