The Lagos State House of Assembly has commenced moves to increase the retirement age of magistrates in the state from 60 to 65 years. The proposed amendment is aimed at strengthening the magistracy, retaining experienced judicial officers and improving the efficiency of justice administration across the state.
The lawmakers began consideration of the proposal on Monday during plenary while debating the Magistrate Courts Amendment Bill 2026. If passed and assented to, the amendment would allow magistrates to remain in service for an additional five years, potentially helping the judiciary retain experienced officers and reduce the loss of institutional knowledge.
Leading the debate, the Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, Public Petitions and LASIEC, Oladipo Ajomale, said the proposed legislation was designed to improve the welfare and conditions of service of magistrates. He noted that better working conditions and improved career prospects were important to attracting, retaining and motivating competent judicial officers.
The proposed review is also expected to support the broader administration of justice by ensuring that experienced magistrates remain available to handle cases and contribute to the development of the state’s judicial system. The bill will undergo further legislative consideration before the House takes a final decision on the proposed increase in the retirement age.
