The Lagos State House of Assembly has called for stronger community-level security and tougher prosecution of individuals involved in the vandalism of public infrastructure across the state.
The lawmakers urged the state government to adequately equip and train the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps and other local security outfits to strengthen surveillance and prevent the destruction of roads, bridges and other public facilities.
The call followed a motion raised by the lawmaker representing Ikorodu II, Moshood Aro, who expressed concern over the vandalism of public infrastructure, particularly in FESTAC. He noted that the destruction of government facilities places an additional financial burden on taxpayers, who ultimately fund their repair or replacement.
The Assembly also called for the prosecution of businesses and individuals who buy, sell or profit from stolen government property. Speaker Mudashiru Obasa backed the call, stressing the need to tackle not only vandals but also the wider network that facilitates the illegal trade in stolen public assets.
The lawmakers further urged stronger collaboration among government agencies, security bodies, local governments and communities to curb infrastructure vandalism and protect public facilities across Lagos.
