Lagos State Health District V has strengthened the emergency response capacity of healthcare personnel through a Basic Life-Saving Skills Training for doctors, nurses, community health officers and other frontline health workers.
The training, held on Monday, August 31, 2026, at the Conference Hall, Oriade Local Council Development Area (LCDA), focused on equipping participants with the practical skills needed to recognise and respond promptly to life-threatening emergencies.
Speaking at the programme, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Health District V, Dr. Oladapo Asiyanbi, urged participants to apply the skills acquired in their respective facilities and communities. He also encouraged regular practice, refresher sessions and the transfer of knowledge to other healthcare workers.
Facilitators from Medics Experts demonstrated Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Basic Life Support (BLS), patient assessment using the ABCDE approach and the use of automated external defibrillators. Participants were also trained on responding to emergencies including choking, severe bleeding, asthma attacks, anaphylaxis, stroke and drowning.
Other officials, including the Director, Planning, Research and Statistics, Dr. Oladeinde Oluwaseun, and the Director, Medical Services and Disease Control, Dr. Ahmad Amina Bello, stressed the need for continuous training, proper documentation and effective application of the skills to improve patient safety and save lives.
The initiative forms part of the Lagos State Government’s efforts to strengthen emergency preparedness, build a competent healthcare workforce and improve the quality of healthcare delivery across the State, in line with the Health and Environment pillar of the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Development Agenda
