The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving awareness of Sickle Cell Disease, urging early diagnosis, better access to healthcare, and stronger public understanding as the world marks World Sickle Cell Day.
In a statement shared via its official social media channels, the government noted that the day provides an opportunity to highlight not only the prevalence of the condition but also the lived experiences of individuals and families managing its long-term challenges.
It emphasised that beyond medical statistics, Sickle Cell Disease affects real people who continue to demonstrate resilience, strength, and courage in their daily lives.
The government stressed the importance of early diagnosis as a key factor in improving treatment outcomes, noting that timely detection can significantly enhance quality of care and increase life expectancy for patients.
It also called for expanded access to quality healthcare services, stating that a stronger and more responsive health system is essential to adequately support those living with the condition.
According to the statement, public education and awareness remain critical in addressing misconceptions and reducing the stigma often associated with Sickle Cell Disease. The government urged collective responsibility in building a more informed and compassionate society that supports affected individuals.
