The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging digital technology and artificial intelligence to drive tourism development, improve visitor experiences and promote the state’s cultural heritage.
The commitment was highlighted as the state joined the global community to commemorate the 2026 World Tourism Day on Sunday, September 27, under the theme, “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism.”
The annual celebration, marked by the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, underscores the growing role of technology in destination marketing, tourism management and the delivery of cultural and creative experiences.
Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, said the government remained committed to positioning Lagos as a leading destination for innovation-driven tourism while preserving its rich cultural heritage and distinctive identity.
She noted that the growing reliance on digital platforms by travellers to discover destinations, plan trips and access information makes technology an essential tool for developing the tourism sector.
According to the Commissioner, digital transformation also presents opportunities for tourism operators, creatives and businesses to expand their reach, improve audience engagement, develop new markets and strengthen their operations.
Benson-Awoyinka stressed that Lagos would continue to promote collaboration among government agencies, private-sector operators, investors, creatives and technology innovators to build a sustainable and competitive tourism ecosystem.
She further emphasised that technological advancement must complement, rather than undermine, the state’s cultural identity, heritage and hospitality, which remain central to its tourism appeal.
The Ministry called on stakeholders across the tourism and creative industries to embrace innovation and explore emerging digital opportunities to build a more accessible, sustainable and digitally connected tourism economy.
