The Lagos State Government has advanced its digital education agenda with the distribution of 160 tablet devices to designated junior secondary schools under the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) Programme.
The presentation ceremony, held on Friday, July 24, 2026, at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education in Alausa, Ikeja, marks the first phase of a statewide initiative aimed at strengthening education management through technology. The BESDA Programme is a partnership between the World Bank, the Federal Ministry of Education, and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), designed to improve education planning and promote evidence-based decision-making.
Speaking at the event, the Director of Project Planning and Research, Mr. Opeyemi Martins, announced that each participating junior secondary school will receive 30GB of monthly data from Airtel to support internet connectivity and enhance teaching, learning, and administrative activities.
Also addressing participants, the Director of Basic Education Services, Mrs. Toyin Oyedele, reminded school administrators that the tablets remain government property and must be properly maintained. She urged principals and teachers to ensure the devices are handed over to successors whenever transfers occur.
Stakeholders at the event described the initiative as a significant milestone in Lagos State’s digital transformation of the education sector. They noted that the tablets will improve data collection, monitoring, reporting, and planning, ultimately enhancing learning outcomes and the overall management of basic education.
The initial distribution of 160 tablets is the first phase of a broader rollout that will extend to all junior secondary schools across the state, providing schools with digital tools to support efficient administration and data-driven educational planning.
The initiative underscores the Lagos State Government’s commitment, in collaboration with the World Bank, the Federal Ministry of Education, and UBEC, to leveraging technology to strengthen the education system. It also aligns with ongoing efforts to improve accountability, support informed policymaking, and deliver more responsive and efficient educational services for learners across Lagos State.
As implementation continues, the BESDA Programme is expected to enhance education management processes while equipping schools with the digital resources needed to drive sustainable improvements in educational service delivery statewide.
