Lagos State has been ranked the most climate-resilient city in West Africa after scoring 86.3/100 in the 2026 West Africa Climate Governance Index (WACGI), the highest among 209 sub-national governments across the 15 ECOWAS countries.
The assessment evaluated climate governance, transparency, climate finance, public participation, implementation capacity, and climate-risk management. Lagos ranked ahead of Kano, Abuja, Greater Accra, Dakar, Praia, Porto-Novo, and Abidjan.
In recognition of the achievement, WACGI conferred its Grand Laureate of Climate Governance award on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for leading what it described as the region’s most resilient climate governance framework.
The France-based climate policy body said the ranking aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union’s Agenda 2063, while also acknowledging Nigeria’s progress in climate governance despite ongoing environmental challenges.
