The Lagos State Government has commenced stakeholder engagement on the proposed improvement of Ikotun Junction, covering the Ijegun Road, Isolo Road, and Idimu Road intersection, as part of efforts to ease traffic congestion, improve connectivity, and enhance mobility in the area.
The engagement, held at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Igando/Ikotun Local Council Development Area Secretariat, brought together traditional rulers, community leaders, residents, traders, and other stakeholders.
Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, said the intervention would improve accessibility, ease congestion, and create a more organized environment for movement and commercial activities.
Olumide also called for proper management of informal spaces within the project area after completion to sustain the benefits of the intervention and prevent a return to uncoordinated activities.
Representing the Commissioner for Transportation, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Olawale Musa, identified roadside trading and unregulated commercial activities as major contributors to congestion along the Ikotun axis.
He assured stakeholders whose properties or legitimate interests may be affected by the project of adequate compensation in line with government policies, while urging affected persons and community leaders to support the project for timely completion.
The Permanent Secretary, Office of Physical Planning, Mr. Olayinka Adebayo Wasiu, also appealed to stakeholders to cooperate with the government and project consultants, noting that their participation would be crucial to the successful delivery of the project.
Chairman of Igando/Ikotun LCDA, Senior Comrade Lasisi Ayinde Akinsanya, commended the state government for the intervention and pledged the council’s full support.
The Onikotun of Ikotun Kingdom, HRM Oba Azeez Gbadabiu Asiwaju, equally welcomed the project and assured the government of the cooperation of the traditional institution and residents.
Stakeholders acknowledged the importance of the intervention to the socio-economic development of Ikotun, particularly in reducing traffic congestion, improving connectivity, and promoting orderly development, while also making recommendations to minimize disruption during construction.
