The Lagos State Government has strengthened its campaign against illegal waste disposal by securing the commitment of major transport unions to help maintain cleaner roads, highways, bus stops and motor parks across the state.
The development followed a strategic meeting held at the Ministry of Transportation involving the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), as part of efforts to clear the existing waste backlog and improve environmental sanitation statewide.
The engagement was convened on the directive of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and was represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff and the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi. The Special Adviser on Transportation, Sola Giwa, also participated in the meeting, which forms part of a special task force initiative aimed at protecting public spaces from indiscriminate waste dumping.
During the meeting, the transport unions pledged to support the government’s environmental enforcement drive by monitoring activities within their parks, routes and bus stops, while discouraging illegal dumping and poor waste management practices along transport corridors.
The Commissioner for Transportation emphasized that transport managers would be held accountable for the cleanliness of facilities under their supervision. He warned that operators whose parks, terminals or designated areas are found to be dirty or poorly maintained would face consequences.
To strengthen coordination and ensure sustained compliance, the state government announced plans to establish a dedicated communication and monitoring platform for regular engagement, reporting and follow-up with transport stakeholders.
The government also acknowledged the support provided by transport unions during the recent environmental sanitation exercise and expressed optimism that the partnership would enhance ongoing efforts to promote a cleaner, safer and more orderly Lagos.
The renewed collaboration is expected to play a significant role in the state’s broader strategy to improve environmental sustainability, public health and urban cleanliness while reinforcing compliance with waste management regulations.
