The Lagos State Government has commenced the 2026 Mother, Infant and Child Development (MICHD) Programme across the state’s six Health Districts, with the Health District I edition held in Abekoko, Agege.
Speaking at the flag-off, Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Dr. Afolabi Abiodun Tajudeen, said the initiative is aimed at promoting maternal and child wellbeing, improving access to nutritional support and strengthening awareness of available healthcare services.
Under the 2026 programme, 5,000 nutritional food packs will be distributed to pregnant women across the six Health Districts, more than double the number of beneficiaries recorded in 2025.
The programme also provides an avenue for government to engage directly with residents, receive feedback and identify areas for improvement in healthcare and other social services.
Permanent Secretary, Health District I, Dr. Sola Pitan, urged residents to utilise available healthcare facilities, register for Ilera Eko and ensure children receive routine immunisation. He also advised residents to promptly seek medical attention if they develop symptoms or suspect exposure to diphtheria.
The programme featured free health services, including maternal healthcare, family planning, Vitamin A supplementation, malnutrition screening, birth registration, HIV screening, and tuberculosis screening and treatment.
A major highlight was the distribution of nutritional food packs containing items such as rice, beans, garri, semovita, oats, milk, beverages, dry pap and eggs to pregnant women.
