The Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has opened registration for the maiden edition of the Lagos Cleaner Energy Schools Innovation Challenge 2026, an initiative aimed at promoting clean energy innovation and nurturing young talents in secondary schools.
According to a statement signed by the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Adetola Idowu, the competition is open to eligible Senior Secondary School One (SS1) and Senior Secondary School Two (SS2) students from Education Districts I, II and III.
Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, said the programme is designed to inspire creativity, innovation, and critical thinking among students while equipping them to develop practical solutions to energy challenges.
“The future of sustainable energy depends not only on infrastructure but, more importantly, on people. Through the Lagos Cleaner Energy Schools Innovation Challenge, we are investing in the next generation of innovators by nurturing creativity, inspiring critical thinking, and empowering students to develop practical solutions,” Ogunleye said.
Participating schools are required to form teams comprising five students, a supervising teacher, and a mentor. The teams will compete in district-level contests before progressing to the state championship with their clean energy solutions.
The ministry noted that the initiative aligns with the Lagos State Government’s THEMES+ Agenda, promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, youth development, and clean energy innovation.
Eligible schools have been encouraged to register through the official application portal and complete all required documentation before the deadline.
