The Lagos State Government is reviewing strategies to strengthen primary healthcare services across the state, with a focus on improving access, coordination and referral systems in communities.
The initiative was discussed at the Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board workshop on the 2027–2029 LGA and LCDA PHC Upgrade and Service Delivery Work Plan held at Lakowe.
Participants from the state and the 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas considered and approved a draft PHC Compact for further review, aimed at clarifying responsibilities, financing and accountability.
The plan also recognises the role of community-based providers, including patent medicine stores, pharmacies and traditional medicine practitioners, while prioritising prevention, early detection and referral for infectious diseases, chronic conditions and mental health.
Lagos is also looking to international experiences, including Malaysia’s primary healthcare model, as it develops strategies suited to the needs of its growing population.
