Lagos Set to Launch Lekki Port Phase 2 Expansion

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that work on Phase 2 of the Lekki Deep Sea Port will commence soon as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Lagos’ position as West Africa’s leading maritime, logistics, and investment hub.

The governor made the disclosure during the Invest Lagos Summit 3.0, where he highlighted key infrastructure projects designed to drive economic growth, regional trade, and investment across the state.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the impressive performance and rapid growth of the Lekki Deep Sea Port have accelerated plans for expansion, with the facility already approaching the limits of its installed operational capacity less than five years after commencement.

“With the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) creating a market of over 1.4 billion people and a combined GDP exceeding $3 trillion, Lagos occupies a uniquely strategic position. The Lekki Deep Sea Port, within five years, is moving to Phase 2 because it is almost reaching the full potential of its installed capacity,” the governor stated.

Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the port expansion is part of a broader infrastructure development agenda aimed at transforming Lagos into a globally competitive commercial and industrial centre.

“These are not just aspirations but projects that have been implemented and are under implementation. They have been funded, progressing, and transforming the investment landscape of our state,” he added.

The governor noted that the second phase of the project will significantly increase cargo-handling capacity, improve logistics efficiency, facilitate international trade, and reinforce Lagos’ strategic role under the African Continental Free Trade Area framework.

Also speaking at the summit, Managing Director of Lekki Port, Wang Qiang, commended the Lagos State Government for creating a stable and investor-friendly environment that continues to attract major private-sector investments.

“We are deeply encouraged by the continued support of the Lagos State Government, whose infrastructure-led policies have created a stable and forward-looking environment for long-term maritime investment,” Qiang said.

He described the planned expansion as a landmark development that will strengthen the port’s competitiveness and operational efficiency.

“The commencement of the next phase of development represents a significant milestone in our journey to expand capacity, enhance operational efficiency, and strengthen Lekki Port’s position as a premier gateway for West African trade under the AfCFTA framework,” he stated.

Qiang added that the expansion would improve logistics operations along the Lekki corridor, increase shipping capacity, attract more global maritime investors, and support growing regional and international trade demands.

The Lekki Port Phase 2 project is expected to play a crucial role in advancing Nigeria’s trade facilitation goals, expanding maritime infrastructure, and solidifying Lagos’ status as one of Africa’s most important commercial and logistics gateways.
