The Lagos State Government has commenced the construction of a new workers’ village at Ajasa, Command, in the Ipaja area as part of efforts to expand access to affordable housing for residents, particularly the working class.
The housing project comprises 11 blocks of one- and two-bedroom apartments, providing a total of 176 residential units equipped with modern infrastructure.
Speaking during an inspection of the project, the Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, said the development aligns with the state’s commitment to increasing the supply of affordable homes for Lagosians.
Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Abdulhafis Toriola, and other officials from the Ministry of Housing, the commissioner also inspected the ongoing Egan-Igando Housing Scheme, which consists of 636 housing units alongside supporting infrastructure, including a football pitch, tennis court, shopping mall, solar-powered water filtration system, and retail outlets designed to create a self-sustaining community.
Akinderu-Fatai urged contractors handling the Egan-Igando project to speed up work and ensure its completion within the next few weeks to pave the way for its commissioning by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
“We are here to assess the progress of work and identify areas requiring urgent attention. We have a contractor who is behind schedule, and that is one of the key challenges we are addressing. However, this will not prevent us from achieving our goal of completing these projects,” he said.
The commissioner described the inspection as part of the government’s continuous monitoring process aimed at ensuring that all housing projects meet approved standards and specifications.
He also visited the Beacon Estate in Ipaja, a joint venture between the Lagos State Government and a private developer. The estate comprises 126 housing units, including 80 ongoing two-bedroom apartments and 48 completed three-bedroom apartments.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to quality housing delivery, Akinderu-Fatai said the projects reflect the administration’s vision of building a Greater Lagos while providing decent accommodation for residents.
He assured Lagosians that homes under the LagosHOMS scheme would remain affordable, stressing that beneficiaries would pay below prevailing market rates.
According to him, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains committed to ensuring that low- and middle-income earners have access to affordable housing. He also called on private sector developers to invest in housing projects targeted at low-income earners to help reduce the state’s housing deficit.
The commissioner disclosed that all ongoing housing projects inspected are expected to be completed before the end of the year, provided contractors adhere to approved timelines and project specifications.
He added that the Ministry of Housing would continue to maintain close supervision of all ongoing projects to ensure quality delivery and compliance with government standards.
