The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safe, functional and sustainable government housing estates, urging facility managers and residents to embrace proactive maintenance and shared responsibility.
The call was made at a Facility Management Workshop organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Housing at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Alausa, Ikeja.
The workshop, themed “Know Your Estate to Own It,” brought together more than 80 Residents’ Associations and 102 participants, including facility managers, government officials and other stakeholders involved in managing state-owned housing estates.
The Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, said government’s responsibility extends beyond constructing and delivering housing projects, stressing that effective management and maintenance are essential to preserving the long-term value and liveability of the estates.
He called for stronger collaboration among the Ministry, facility managers, residents’ associations and residents, particularly on service charges, compliance with estate regulations and maintenance of shared infrastructure.
The Commissioner also urged facility managers to maintain professional standards and ensure that procurement and maintenance decisions are based on technical competence.
Participants were encouraged to move from reactive to preventive maintenance, conduct regular facility condition assessments, improve financial accountability and adopt technology for maintenance tracking, security, communication and record-keeping.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housing, Engr. Abdulhafis Gbolahan Toriola, emphasised collaboration and constructive feedback, while urging stakeholders to comply with regulations on land use, property extensions and unauthorised conversion of residential properties.
The Ministry also recognised selected estates for their performance in estate management, including Abraham Adesanya Housing Estate, Ajah; Emeka Anyaoku Housing Estate; Choice Estate, Agbowa; and Lateef Kayode Jakande Housing Estate.
The Ministry said the workshop is part of efforts to strengthen the management of government housing assets and promote a sustainable maintenance culture across Lagos State.
