The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed that one person died following a gas tanker and tipper truck explosion along the Lekki-Epe Expressway on Saturday.
This update follows an earlier statement by the Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, who reported that properties worth thousands of naira were destroyed and two individuals were burnt beyond recognition in the incident.
According to LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the accident occurred near Ologuro Bus Stop in the Sango-Tedo area. He explained that emergency responders discovered a tipper truck, without an identified registration number, had crashed into the rear of a gas tanker, triggering a fire.
Preliminary findings indicate that the crash was caused by overspeeding and reckless driving on the part of the tipper truck driver. Sadly, the driver, an adult male, died from the impact, while two adult women sustained minor injuries and were treated on-site by the Lagos State Ambulance Service.
The fire also spread to four nearby roadside shops, causing extensive damage. Emergency teams noted that the tanker still contains trapped contents, and recovery efforts are ongoing.
LASEMA’s Shark Team, working alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and ambulance officials, responded promptly and managed to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings.
Authorities confirmed that the fire is now under control, although recovery operations are still in progress.
