The Lagos State Government has commenced plans to introduce specialised vehicle number plates for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to promote inclusion, accessibility and ease of mobility across the state.
The proposal was discussed during a meeting between the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) and the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) as part of efforts to develop a disability-friendly vehicle identification system.
Speaking during the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the MVAA, Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, said the initiative aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of building “A Greater Lagos That Leaves No One Behind.”
He explained that the special number plates would improve recognition, accessibility and ease of movement for persons with disabilities while supporting inclusive governance.
Muri-Okunola also disclosed that discussions have commenced with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to facilitate the implementation of the initiative.
Earlier, the General Manager of LASODA, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, said the proposed number plates would cater to all categories of persons with disabilities, as well as parents and caregivers of children living with disabilities.
She noted that the initiative reinforces the state’s commitment to protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, eliminating discrimination and promoting equal opportunities for all.
