The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening economic and trade relations with the Republic of Turkey, with a renewed focus on expanding investment opportunities, infrastructure development, and bilateral cooperation.
Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, gave the assurance while receiving the Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey, His Excellency, Mr. Mehmet Poroy, and members of the Turkish delegation at the Round House, Alausa, Ikeja.
Highlighting Lagos’ position as Nigeria’s commercial and financial capital, Dr. Hamzat noted that the state’s dynamic economy, strategic location, entrepreneurial culture, and growing population continue to make it an attractive destination for local and foreign investment.
He acknowledged the longstanding partnership between Lagos State and Turkish companies, particularly in the construction sector, where several firms have played significant roles in delivering major public infrastructure projects, including the Onikan Stadium.
According to the Deputy Governor, the successful collaboration over the years provides a strong foundation for expanding cooperation into other strategic sectors capable of driving economic growth and shared prosperity.
“We have enjoyed a productive relationship with Turkish companies over the years, particularly in infrastructure development. We believe the time is right to deepen this partnership and explore new opportunities that will further strengthen economic cooperation between Lagos and Turkey,” he said.
Dr. Hamzat expressed confidence that increased engagement with Turkish investors would stimulate commerce, attract additional investments, accelerate infrastructure development, and create more employment opportunities for residents.
He also reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s readiness to engage in further discussions aimed at identifying areas of mutual interest and fostering stronger bilateral ties.
Earlier, the Turkish Ambassador, Mr. Mehmet Poroy, said his visit was aimed at strengthening economic cooperation between Turkey and Lagos State while encouraging the government to sustain policies that promote an enabling environment for foreign investment.
He appealed to the State Government to continue considering Turkish firms for future infrastructure and development projects, noting that Turkish companies possess the expertise, technical capacity, and experience required to deliver world-class projects.
The Ambassador explained that his visit followed the directive of the Turkish President after the Nigerian President’s recent visit to Turkey, with the objective of deepening economic relations between both countries.
“This is my first official visit to Lagos, and it reflects our commitment to building on the strong relationship between Turkey and Nigeria. We look forward to expanding cooperation with Lagos in infrastructure, trade, and other key sectors that will benefit both parties,” he said.
Mr. Poroy added that the Turkish delegation would also engage with the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) to strengthen existing business partnerships, explore new investment opportunities, facilitate technology transfer, and promote sustainable economic growth.
The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of Lagos State and the Republic of Turkey to advancing mutually beneficial partnerships that will drive investment, innovation, infrastructure development, and inclusive economic prosperity.
