The Lagos State Government has unveiled the official mascot and logo for the maiden edition of the National Intermediate Games, reaffirming its readiness to host the nationwide sporting event later this year.
The unveiling ceremony, held in Ikeja, marked the commencement of activities for the Games and attracted top government officials, sports administrators and stakeholders from across Nigeria.
The newly unveiled mascot, designed as an avatar in traditional Yoruba attire, features the iconic Eyo masquerade cap inscribed with “LASGIDI”, the Games’ logo on its chest and Lagos-themed colours, symbolising the state’s vibrant culture and sporting identity. Paired with canvas footwear, the mascot reflects the humble beginnings of every athlete and the journey towards sporting excellence.
The Games’ logo also celebrates Lagos’ cultural heritage, with the Eyo masquerade representing the state’s rich history and identity, while the Opambata (staff of authority) forms part of the letter “K” in Eko, symbolising leadership, discipline and guidance. The colourful design embodies energy, diversity, unity and the aspirations of Nigeria’s future sporting champions.
Speaking at the event, the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Hon. Lekan Fatodu, said the unveiling demonstrates the state’s preparedness to host a world-class competition.
According to him, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has fulfilled his promise to deliver a memorable sporting event that will redefine grassroots sports development in Nigeria.
Fatodu disclosed that renovation works at key venues, including the Teslim Balogun Stadium, are progressing rapidly, while partnerships with private facilities such as the British International School, Oniru, will ensure athletes compete in top-quality sporting environments.
Also speaking, the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, said Lagos earned the hosting rights because of its proven record in grassroots sports development and talent discovery.
He further announced that Nigerian children in the diaspora will participate as the 38th state at the Games, with qualifying trials scheduled to hold in London on July 17. He said the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to engaging Nigerian youths abroad and encouraging them to proudly represent the country in international competitions.
The event was also attended by the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende, and the Deputy Chief of Staff and Co-Chairman of the Games, Hon. Sam Egube, who reiterated Lagos State’s commitment to hosting a successful and memorable National Intermediate Games.
