The Lagos State Government has called on senior communication managers to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the speed, accuracy and effectiveness of government communication.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, said AI could help government institutions disseminate information more efficiently, engage citizens better and respond more effectively to their needs.
He spoke following a five-day international workshop in London themed “Strategic Public Service Communication Dynamics: Empowering Public Sector Leaders.”
The workshop brought together senior public communication managers from Lagos and Plateau States, who received practical training on the use of AI and other digital tools to improve the communication of government policies, programmes and services.
Participants explored AI applications in research, content development, communication planning, message refinement, digital engagement and audience-focused communication, while also examining issues of ethics, accuracy, transparency and accountability.
The Chief Executive Officer of UK Conferences, Mr. Wale Oyeniyi, said AI-enabled communication had become increasingly important as public institutions seek to improve citizen engagement, crisis management and service delivery.
Former Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Information and Strategy, Mr. Olarewaju Bajulaiye, described the training as timely, stressing the need for public institutions to adopt AI responsibly while retaining human judgment and professional standards.
The workshop also produced a practical framework to help participants identify areas where AI can add value, select appropriate tools and measure their impact.
The State Government said the knowledge gained would help strengthen the communication interface between government and citizens through clearer messaging, faster dissemination of information, improved digital engagement and more effective communication of policies and programmes.
The training featured facilitators including Dr. Hayiath Qureshi, Dr. Wale Oni and Dr. Damilola Adegoke, and was attended by senior Lagos communication officials and media managers.
