The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), has called on residents to partner with the Agency in eliminating the unlawful use of “No Return, No Refund, No Replacement” and “No Cancellation After Payment” policies by businesses across the State.
The General Manager/Chief Executive Officer of LASCOPA, Afolabi Solebo, Esq., said while businesses may set reasonable terms and conditions, such policies cannot override consumers’ legal rights where goods or services are defective, unsafe, misrepresented, or unfit for their intended purpose.
According to Solebo, consumers should not be compelled to accept defective products or services simply because a business displays a disclaimer, stressing that any policy designed to deny lawful consumer rights is unfair and unenforceable.
He urged consumers to understand their rights and report violations to LASCOPA for prompt intervention, while encouraging businesses, including hotels, event centres, and service providers, to adopt transparent, fair, and consumer-friendly return, refund, replacement, and cancellation policies.
LASCOPA also advised residents to inspect goods before purchase where possible, retain receipts and proof of payment, and promptly report cases of unfair trade practices, deceptive business conduct, defective products, or denial of legitimate consumer rights.
The Agency reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing consumer protection laws and promoting a fair, safe, and competitive marketplace that supports responsible business practices and strengthens consumer confidence across Lagos State.
