The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has swiftly responded to a multiple-vehicle accident at Kara Bridge, inward OPIC, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, restoring traffic flow after a coordinated recovery operation.
The incident occurred in the early hours of today, prompting the deployment of the LRT Tiger Squad stationed at C3 at 6:05 a.m. following a distress call. Responders arrived at the scene within the projected response time and found seven vehicles involved in the crash.
The vehicles included a 40-foot container truck without a registration number, a white Toyota Hilux with registration number BDG 422 XY, a white interstate bus with registration number GBY 784 XY, a Hyundai Odyssey with registration number AAA 48 BP, a Sienna without a registration number, a Toyota Highlander with registration number EKY 491 HB, and a Mitsubishi Hilux with registration number JJJ 977 JT.
Preliminary findings indicated that the container truck developed a mechanical fault while in motion, resulting in a loss of control before it collided with the other six vehicles.
LASEMA immediately activated its incident management protocol and assumed coordination of the emergency response. Working in collaboration with the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Nigeria Police Force, the Agency introduced traffic control measures to secure the scene, protect motorists and prevent secondary incidents.
With support from private towing operators, responders conducted coordinated recovery operations and successfully evacuated all the affected vehicles from the carriageway to the roadside, allowing traffic to resume.
No death or injury was recorded in the incident. LASTMA officials remained at the scene to monitor traffic and ensure smooth movement, while the recovered vehicles were handed over to the police officer at the scene for documentation and further necessary action.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, commended the LRT, LASTMA and the Nigeria Police Force for their professionalism and rapid response, noting that their coordinated intervention helped prevent casualties and restore traffic within a short period.
Oke-Osanyintolu reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property through continued investment in emergency response infrastructure, personnel training and the decentralisation of response units.
He urged motorists, particularly operators of articulated vehicles, to prioritise regular vehicle maintenance, comply with roadworthiness regulations and exercise caution when travelling on major highways.
Members of the public are encouraged to report emergencies and road traffic incidents promptly through LASEMA’s toll-free emergency lines, 767 and 112, for immediate intervention.
