The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has successfully contained a fire involving a gas-laden tanker at Ola Farm Bus Stop along Abaranje Road, Ikotun, preventing the incident from escalating into a major disaster.
The LASEMA Response Team arrived promptly at the scene and found the tanker engulfed in flames. Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle was travelling at high speed when it hit a road bump, causing the driver to lose control. The impact resulted in a tyre burst, which triggered the fire.
In collaboration with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, emergency responders swiftly extinguished the fire, secured the area and prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby residential buildings, businesses and other road users.
The operation was supported by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Ikotun Division, who coordinated traffic diversion and crowd control throughout the emergency response.
Speaking on the incident, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded.
“We are pleased to report that there was no loss of life or casualties. The fire has been completely extinguished, and efforts are now focused on the safe evacuation of the affected tanker to restore normal traffic flow,” he said.
Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu disclosed that LASEMA had deployed heavy-duty recovery equipment to remove the tanker from the roadway, adding that the operation was ongoing.
He also advised motorists to observe speed limits, particularly around road bumps and within residential areas, noting that responsible driving is essential to protecting lives and property.
The Permanent Secretary reaffirmed LASEMA’s commitment to disaster preparedness, rapid emergency response and the protection of lives and property across Lagos State. He commended all responding agencies for their professionalism and thanked residents for their cooperation during the operation.
He urged members of the public to report emergencies promptly through the Lagos State Emergency toll-free lines, 112 and 767, to facilitate swift response.
