The Lagos State Government has commenced the installation of new pumps at the Iju Headworks and Akute Water Intake Stations as part of efforts to increase water production, improve operational efficiency and expand access to safe potable water across the state.
The project, being implemented through the Lagos Water Corporation (LWC), is funded by the state government under the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and forms part of ongoing investments aimed at strengthening Lagos’ water infrastructure.
According to the corporation, the installation is a key component of the Rehabilitation of Iju Headworks and Akute Intake Station – Lots 1, 2 and 3, a flagship project designed to modernise critical water production facilities, enhance service delivery and meet the growing water needs of residents.
The rehabilitation programme is part of an eight-month initiative covering the Iju and Adiyan Water Treatment Plants, fully funded by the Lagos State Government and scheduled to run from February to October 2026.
Speaking at the project’s kick-off meeting earlier this year, the Managing Director of Lagos Water Corporation, Engr. Mukhtaar Tijani, described the rehabilitation as a transformative initiative aligned with the corporation’s strategic business plan and the state’s vision of delivering reliable and sustainable public water services.
He explained that the project involves the replacement and upgrade of critical pumping systems and supporting infrastructure to restore optimal operational efficiency and significantly boost water production capacity.
Tijani noted that the intervention reflects the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to revitalising the state’s water infrastructure and ensuring that more Lagos residents have access to reliable public water supply.
He urged contractors and other stakeholders to adhere to the highest engineering standards and ensure timely completion of the project.
Upon completion, the upgraded facilities are expected to improve the operational performance of the Iju Headworks and Akute Water Intake Stations, reduce downtime, strengthen service reliability and enhance access to clean, safe and sustainable water for millions of Lagos residents.
