The Lagos State Government, through Health District III, has urged residents to prioritise their heart health by embracing preventive healthcare, undergoing regular medical check-ups and adopting healthy lifestyle practices. The call was made as the State joined the global community to commemorate World Heart Day 2026.
The Permanent Secretary, Health District III, Dr. Monsurat Adeleke, made the call during an appearance on TVC News to mark the occasion, themed “Don’t Miss a Beat.” She explained that the theme highlights the importance of recognising the early warning signs of cardiovascular diseases and taking timely steps to prevent complications.
Adeleke identified hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity and excessive alcohol consumption as major risk factors for heart disease. She therefore encouraged residents, particularly adults above 18 years and people with a family history of cardiovascular conditions, to regularly monitor their blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels at the nearest Primary Healthcare Centre.
She disclosed that Health District III, which covers Primary Healthcare Centres across Ibeju-Lekki, Eti-Osa and Epe, has continued to strengthen preventive and curative healthcare services. According to her, the District has provided essential equipment, including cardiac monitors, blood pressure monitors, glucometers and weighing scales, to support early detection and monitoring of cardiovascular risk factors.
The Permanent Secretary added that the District also organises free medical outreaches, conducts public enlightenment programmes and trains healthcare workers to identify and manage cardiovascular risk factors. She stressed that early detection and appropriate medical intervention can help reduce the risk of serious heart-related complications.
As Lagos joins the rest of the world in marking World Heart Day 2026, Adeleke urged residents to pay closer attention to their heart health, recognise possible warning signs and take proactive steps towards maintaining healthier lifestyles and improving their chances of living longer, healthier lives.
